Skype is a well-known messenger for mobile and desktop platforms. Apart from texting, it provides free audio/video calls, delayed messages conferencing and a rich collection of stickers. If staying in touch is of utmost importance — try Skype.

Interface 4-/5

Preserving its legendary bluish interface, Skype has become sleeker and more up-to-date during the last five years. You have contact list on the left, which can be updated automatically from your phone book — akin to WhatsApp or Viber.

Its GUI is diluted with a versatile feature palette. And though it’s nice to have the Call, Mute and other buttons right away at hand, Skype also has some visual clutter, which can be confusing if you’re using it for the first time.

Features 5-/5

Skype is a versatile beast that lets you text, call, send audio and video messages, and exchange media files. It supports all popular formats from JPEG and RAR to WAV.

The call quality is usually okish, but only if you have a stable connection. With a weak Wi-Fi signal, Skype can provide texting at best. And even then, there’s a risk it’ll take Skype about 20 minutes to deliver a simple “Hello”.

Group conferencing is one of its best options so far. Due to self-isolation, its capacity has been expanded: now you can host 50 people to a group call. And that’s free of charge. Callers can be muted, invited, blocked, and so on. So, you get all the administrative rights you want.

To liven up a convo, you can use Skype’s emojis, stickers, and Snapchat-like filters. Besides, there’s an option that allows hiding away your background. Tap More, select Customize My Background and choose Blur.

Usability 5-/5

For a free messenger, Skype isn’t the worst there is. Provided your connectivity is stable, you can have a business or private calls of decent quality for free. It’s also a great tool to coordinate team efforts, stay in touch with the close ones, and just be connected to the world.

Platforms

Skype is available on all major platforms, including Android and iOS. However, older versions like Windows 7 haven’t made it to the party as their support has been discontinued. Your only option is to prevent Skype from updating if you want to keep using it.

Overall

Skype is one of the top free communication tools. It’s not immune to lagging and goes into hibernation when the connection weakens. At the same time, it offers a lot of valuable features at a $0 price.
